New extensions are constantly being released, making it necessary to frequently update Extension Overload. You can, of course, always find the latest version at http://www.mir.com.my/~cmteng/, but there is an even easier way for you to stay current: by using the Simple Internet Version Control (SIVC ΓÇô pronounced ΓÇ£civicΓÇ¥) feature.
SIVC works by asking a specialized server on the Internet for the latest Extension Overload version. This version is then compared with the version on your hard disk and, if it is found to be newer, you are alerted to the fact and offered the opportunity to download the new version.
Note that the only information about you or your computer that is transmitted during this process is your IP address since this is required to return the information. No other information such as your name, your serial number for Extension Overload, the size of your hard disk is transmitted. All the server does in addition to sending out information to you is to count the number of requests it receives, allowing us to note the level of interest in Extension Overload.
Setting up SIVC
If you want to use SIVC, make sure that the SIVC Query Engine is located in your Extensions folder.
To set up the SIVC preferences, choose SIVC Preferences form Extension OverloadΓÇÖs File menu.
 
In this dialog, you can enable or disable SIVC by checking or unchecking the Internet Version Control checkbox. In addition, you can decide whether you want to be informed about both new release and new beta versions of Extension Overload or only about new release versions.
Click the Defaults button to reset all preferences to their factory settings, click Cancel to close the dialog while reverting any changes in the preference settings, or click OK to close the dialog and make the new preference settings take effect.
Using SIVC
To check whether a new version of Extension Overload is available, choose Get Extension Overload Version from the File menu. (Note that this creates an Internet conenction, causing your modem to dial if you have a dial-up Internet account.)
If your version of Extension Overload is the most current, nothing further happens. If, however, a newer version is available, a window opens:
 
In this window, you are told what version of Extension Overload you are currently using, what the latest release version is, and what the latest test version is. If you want to download either version, simply click on the Download button beside the version you want. (Note that this requires Internet Config or the Internet control panel of Mac OS 8 to be installed and properly configured.)
If you just want to see some information on the product, click the Product Information button.
To close the window without taking any action, click the close box at the left side of the windowΓÇÖs title bar.
